19 ACADEMY's INTERACT CLUB GET GREEN FINGERSThe Academy's Interact club are currently working on a project to improve an area of garden at Primley House Care Home. The aim is to improve the garden for the enjoyment of the residents, staff and visitors. Work began last week where club members, Academy staff and Rotary members started to clear the site of the weeds, brambles and other foliage that had taken hold. Once the site is cleared, a new garden will be designed by students and then planted so it will be ready for the spring.
20 Plymouth Argyle 6th Form Team’s Positive StartWith 2 games of the college league played the Plymouth Argyle 6th form team have showed good displays both home and away with challenging first round league fixtures against Petroc and Bodmin.
21 Cover Manager, Charlotte Singleton, Cycles 110 Miles for Devon Air AmbulanceOn August the 8th, Chris Cook, Luke Sobey and Charlotte Singleton made their way to Ilfracombe in North Devon to cycle 110 miles coast to coast, to finish on Plymouth Hoe. Charlotte decided to do the ride during this summer holidays, not only as a personal challenge but also to raise money for the remarkable air ambulance service, that helped her son-in-law and saves lives all day and every day.
22 Fresher’s Camp Begins The first Year 7 students have now taken part in the first Freshers’ Camp of Every Year 7 student has the opportunity to take part in the camp which takes place in a remote woodland camp, deep in the Dart Valley. Students take part in a range of activities including canoeing, traditional bushcraft, night walks, fire lighting, and challenge themselves on the camp zip wire. Students are guided through through the activities with a focus on developing teamwork, leadership and problem solving skills. They are also encouraged to reflect on what they have taken part in with the aim to help students make progress in the future.
23 Year 9 Boys get the Ball RollingThe Year 9 Football Team kicked off their National Cup campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Teignmouth Community College. Two goals apiece from Dejay Bolton and Hugo Griffiths and a well-taken Ryan McCaskill volley saw PCSA secure a spot in the second round as the boys continued their impressive form from last season. Great Start Lads!
24 Flamingos crowned 2016 Olympic Sports Day Champions!
25 6th Form Outdoor Education Students Afloat!Students studying the Level 3 Sport Outdoor Adventure course have just started their leading water-sports activities unit of work. For this unit students need to participate in stand up paddle boarding and eventually lead a session. They demonstrated a good understanding of the skills but unfortunately for them their balance requires further practice, so they did get a bit wet!
26 Year 7 Ellie Wins Gala Gold!Ellie Pedrick in 7P3 is celebrating after winning not only one gold but two bronze medals. She swam in two galas at the weekend – the Newton Abbot Ribbon Gala and the Exeter Sprint Open Meet and managed to win gold in the 50m freestyle and two bronze medals also – again in 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke. She swims regularly for Brixham Swimming Club. Well done Ellie! We look forward to hearing about your progress at PCSA!
27 6th Form Results Day – 100% Pass RateStaff and students are celebrating outstanding Post 16 examination results; with a 100% pass rate across all subjects. Jane English, Academy Principal, said “Staff and students are to be congratulated on all the hard work they have put in to achieve these results.”
28 Year 11 Leavers’ Prom 2016 With exams over, the final event of the school calendar saw the PCSA Year 11 Prom take place at the wonderful Livermead Cliff Hotel. The sun was shining, the outfits sparkled, pupils dressed to impress and arrived in style.
29 GCSE Results Day Year 11 students and teaching staff are celebrating some excellent GCSE results this year with a significant increase in the number of pupils gaining top grades of A and A*. This years’ cohort made exceptional progress during their 5 years in the academy with a progress 8 score of plus 0.2 (value added ), which means that on average each student achieved two grades higher than the government expectation..
30 Students Take Part in Residential to National School Games at Loughborough UniversityFive students from PCSA were chosen to volunteer at the National School Games: a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age, supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England - Jack Gay, Lewis Round, Sam Woodcock, Georgia Lea and Ellie Tinkler, alongside three young people from St Cuthbert Mayne.
31 Year 10 Students Complete their D of E Practice ExpeditionWell done to the 27 Year 10 students who have just completed their practice expedition for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Students were required to carry all their own kit and equipment needed for the two days, cook a hot meal and setup their tents. All students are now ready for the Assessed Expedition.
32 Paignton Pages Newsletter RelaunchedThe Academy newsletter was relaunched this term with a new look and a new name. The ‘Paignton Pages’ was suggested by students Harry Thompson and Leah Perry – both in Year 10. The newsletter is a great way of sharing our positive news with parents and the wider community. We hope you like it!
